Song of Cascadia

At a time when we’re getting a far-right authoritarian federal government, cities, states, and regions that oppose that agenda need to find ways to exert our independence. Cascadia (especially that portion west of the Cascades) is not like the rest of the country. Here’s a song for Cascadians. I wrote it years ago. (Sound file at end for the melody.)

Song of Cascadia

Chorus:
There is a place we call Cascadia
It is the place I call my home

[repeat]

Verse 1:
Many rivers flow eternally
from the Cascade Mountains to the sea
and the ancient forests rise majestically
reminding us of how it used to be

Chorus:
In this place we call Cascadia
It is the place I call my home
There is a place we call Cascadia
It is the place I call my home

Verse 2:
Spawning salmon come back faithfully
to the waters of their birth from the open sea
and the spotted owl teaches us integrity
reminding us to live sustainably

Chorus:
In this place we call Cascadia
It is the place I call my home
There is a place we call Cascadia
It is the place I call my home

Verse 3:
We come together in community
celebrating all life’s unity
and converging on a dream of what can be
a culture of sustainability

Chorus:
In this place we call Cascadia
It is the place I call my home
There is a place we call Cascadia
It is the place I call my home
Home
Home
(as in Om…)
