Firing line

I hesitate to call myself a writer. I know writers—of poetry, songs, essays—& they’re always writing, working on their craft. Not me. Sometimes I write a poem, or spoken word, or song, or essay, or whatever, but not as a regular practice. Only when the inspiration hits. Sometimes words just show up in my head, & so I write them down.

These are words that showed up tonight:

We’re on both sides of the firing line
some more targeted than others
and in the line of fire most,
the Earth, our common mother

The folks that aim to harm us
most know not what they do
they think that they’re the threatened
when they threaten me or you

That’s not to let them off the hook
but in some ways we’re the same
we all are fighting battles
we just need some better aim
